Columbus man sentenced to 60 years to life for second-degree murder

COLUMBUS, Neb. (KLKN) — On Sep. of 2025, Jack Reeg was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder, use of a weapon to commit a felony and terroristic threats. Reeg was sentenced today for the shooting in Columbus.

According to court documents, Reeg was sentenced after pleading no contest to second-degree murder and one count of use of a firearm to commit a felony. The judge found him guilty and sentenced him to 60 years to life in prison for the second-degree murder conviction. He was also sentenced to a consecutive 15 to 20 years for the use of a weapon to commit a felony conviction.

Reeg received credit for 317 days already served. Two charges, terroristic threats and an additional firearm charge, were dismissed due to the plea agreement.

According to the documents, the judge said a lesser sentence would diminish the seriousness of the crime.

The judge expressed concern that Reeg would remain a threat to society if released.
