LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – To celebrate National Volunteer Week, Community Action decided to give back to residents. The organization delivered “thank you” cake and flowers to its foster grandparent volunteers.

The volunteers have spent time volunteering virtually throughout year, helping mentor children in the Head Start early childhood education program. Community Action foster grandparent Greg Brown volunteers with the program.

“You see them become more comfortable with each other and communicating and the sense that they are being seen,” Brown said. “It’s so important.”

Community Action also displayed encouraging messagesto the volunteers at the Gathering Place soup kitchen.

“We just want to make sure that even though we may not be seeing each other face-to-face we still value them and can’t wait to see them back,” Community Action engagement and partnership specialist Sam Bates said.
