Correctional worker stabbed by inmate with homemade weapon, officials say

Corrections officials say a staff member at the Lincoln Correctional Center suffered serious injuries after being stabbed by an inmate Thursday.

The inmate had been escorted from his cell so workers could inspect a maintenance issue inside. According to NDCS officials, that’s when the inmate, who was wearing restraints, used a homemade weapon fashioned from a toothbrush to stab the back of the staff member’s hand.

NDCS says additional staff members used a pepper spray-like chemical to get the inmate under control.

The injured staff member was treated at the hospital.

The incident will be investigated with findings provided to the county attorney for determination of criminal prosecution. The NDCS disciplinary process will be utilized with sanctions, such as loss of good time, applied according to the rules and regulations.
