LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A Council Bluffs man was arrested Friday after authorities say he fled a traffic stop and caused a three-vehicle crash in Omaha.

A trooper tried to pull over a Kia Forte with expired license plates driving on Highway 75 in Omaha, near Ames Avenue.  The driver, 34-year-old Martel Toles, fled as the Nebraska State Patrol trooper turned on his emergency lights.

Toles then ran a red light and turned onto westbound Ames, according to NSP.  The trooper had to stop pursuing because of traffic in the area.

Toles ran another red light at Ames and 30th Street and struck a vehicle, which collided with a third vehicle, NSP said.  Omaha Police and the trooper arrived at the crash as Toles tried to flee again.

Toles would not exit his vehicle, so Omaha Police used a pepper ball to get him out, according to NSP.  They took him into custody and found a handgun on him during a search.

Two children were inside the Kia and were taken to the Nebraska Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening.  Toles was also taken to the hospital with injuries from the crash.  The occupants of the other two vehicles were not injured.

NSP says Toles had an outstanding warrant from Pottawattamie County, Iowa.  The charges for Friday’s chase are still pending.

Omaha Police are currently investigating the crash.
