Democrat Ann Ashford applies for Sen. Ben Sasse’s seat

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The conventional wisdom is that Gov.-elect Jim Pillen will tap his predecessor to replace Sen. Ben Sasse.

But that’s not stopping a Democrat from throwing her hat in the ring.

Ann Ashford, the widow of former Rep. Brad Ashford, says she is interested in the position.

The attorney from Omaha told the Nebraska Examiner that she would put “constituents over party affiliation every time.”

Sasse will resign from his seat early next month to take over as the University of Florida’s president.

Gov. Pete Ricketts was a major supporter of Pillen’s campaign. He announced last week that he will apply for the Senate seat.
