Deputy seriously injured after pursuit leads to fiery crash in a creek

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A suspect and a deputy both crashed their vehicles following a chase south of Prague Friday night.

The Saunders County Sheriff’s Office says a deputy tried to stop a vehicle speeding on Highway 79 around 10 p.m. The driver then quickly turned onto Road N, and a pursuit began.

At some point during the pursuit, the suspect lost control of his vehicle and rolled into a field, causing the deputy to lose sight of him.

While searching for the suspect, the deputy lost control of their vehicle and crashed into a creek. The crash caused the deputy’s vehicle to burst into flames.

The suspect, Dustin Hayes, 26, of Prague, suffered minor injuries in the rollover crash. He was arrested after being medically cleared.

The deputy, who has not yet been named, suffered serious injuries and was later taken to Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha for observation.
