Douglas County deputy pays Uber driver’s bond, finishes his scheduled drive

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Neb. (KLKN) — This week, a Douglas County deputy decided to do a kind deed for an Uber driver.

When the driver was pulled over for an equipment violation, the deputy noticed the Uber driver had a misdemeanor warrant for a nonviolent offense. According to Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO), the warrant was for missing a court date for a misdemeanor driving offense.

Nebraska State law required the deputy to take the driver into custody and book him into jail.

DCSO said the deputy saw more than a warrant.

“But the deputy saw more than just a traffic violation and a warrant,” DCSO wrote in a social media post. “He saw someone who was working, trying to make a living, and now facing an unexpected night in jail.”

The deputy then decided to pay the driver’s bond so he wouldn’t spend the night in jail.

Another deputy stepped in to complete the trip the Uber driver was finishing.

“Being a Deputy requires a combination of skills and trainings, it requires dedication and commitment. It’s about more than enforcing the law. It’s about compassion, understanding, and recognizing the person behind the circumstances,” DCSO wrote. “It’s about having a heart.”
