On April 7, 2020, Douglas County officials received confirmation that a second Douglas County Health Center
resident died from COVID-19. The long term care resident, a woman in her 90s with several comorbidities, had
been hospitalized after contracting the virus.

Additionally, the Health Center has seven new COVID-19 positive cases – five staff members and two long term
care residents.

Since March 29, 2020, the Health Center has had 25 positive COVID-19 cases in total – 15 long term care
residents and 10 employees, including the two residents who passed away. Nine of the residents are currently
isolated in their rooms at the Health Center. Four of the residents are hospitalized. All are in stable condition.
Erin Nelson, administrator of Douglas County Health Center, said the five employees who most recently tested
positive were in contact with the original positive cases in one of the contained areas of the Health Center.

“We are hopeful we have the virus contained in those two areas of the Health Center,” Nelson said. “We basically
turned those two areas into our own quarantine with guidance from Nebraska Medicine’s Biocontainment Unit
experts.”

The majority of the staff members who have tested positive are in isolation at home and a few have fully recovered
and have returned to their normal activities, Nelson said.

“We are so grateful to hear that our employees who tested positive are recovering,” she said. “This has been
extremely difficult for all of us, but we are so appreciative of our frontline workers who are going above and
beyond to care for our residents.”

Douglas County Health Center officials continue to adhere to CDC recommendations and are in constant
communication with the infectious disease team at Nebraska Medicine for guidance specific to the COVID-19
pandemic. Housekeeping and nursing staff are also working around-the-clock to disinfect and sanitize highlytouched surfaces multiple times a day.
