Drone strikes juvenile at Madison County’s Big Bang Boom event

NORFOLK, Neb. (KLKN) – On Saturday July 4, Madison County was celebration Independence Day with the Big Bang Boom fireworks event. At this event, a child was injured after being struck by a drone.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Department (MCSD) said the aircraft was identified due to drone identification equipment which allowed them to contact the pilot.

According to MCSD, the pilot voluntarily approached law enforcement and has been fully cooperative throughout the investigation. The accident is still being reviewed to determine if any breach of Nebraska law happened.

MCSD urges and reminds residents to operate drones safely. They said in order to do so operators must have Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) authorization and follow specific safety guidelines.
