Dual-sport high school star signs with Husker volleyball, basketball
Maggie Mendelson is joining both the Husker volleyball and basketball programs in 2022.
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Maggie Mendelson is joining both the Husker volleyball and basketball programs in 2022. Nebraska head volleyball coach John Cook and women’s basketball coach Amy Williams announced the official signing on Monday.
In a press release, Mendelson said, “I chose Nebraska because of the relationship I have built with the coaches and they believe I can play both sports, and I appreciate the tradition of those programs at Nebraska.”
Mendelson will be graduating from Fremont High School in North Ogden, Utah a year early. She is the only recruit in the country who is a member of the U.S. youth national teams in both volleyball and basketball.
When recruiting opened back up after a year and a half, John Cook said Maggie’s club tournament in Salt Lake City was the first place he went.
“Maggie is a special talent, an elite competitor and a multi-sport athlete, which we love here at Nebraska,” Cook said.
Both Cook and Williams said they presented a great plan for Mendelson to succeed in both sports.
As a basketball player, Williams says Maggie runs the floor well and has excellent quickness. “She obviously has great timing, which allows her to be a shot-blocker on both the basketball and volleyball courts,” Williams said.
