Encouragement Unlimited, Mary Ellen’s offer free Thanksgiving meals to Lincolnites

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – For the first time, Encouragement Unlimited and Mary Ellen’s Restaurant teamed up to offer free Thanksgiving meals this year.

The new community event fed over 100 people from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday.

The project was funded through community donations, making meals free to the public.

Monetary donations were being accepted at the restaurant on a voluntary basis.

President of the non-profit, Pastor John Harris, says the donations will be turned into gift cards to local stores to help struggling families during the holiday season.

“We’re grateful for people who are taking advantage of this for us. We’re thanking them for coming and getting the meals from us. And so that’s a little bit different,” Harris said.  “It’s not like we’re doing them a great favor. We have the privilege, we have the opportunity, we’re blessed to be a blessing.”

Harris hopes the new tradition will be one that carries on in the future.
