Erik Chinander talks Blackshirts and Nebraska’s defensive depth chart

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Huskers have two scrimmages behind them and now turn their focus to the real task at hand: the season opener in Dublin against Northwestern.

Defensive coordinator Erik Chinander says the depth chart is quickly filling out, but some spots could come down to how they look in Ireland.

Some units are solidified, but other groups have strong competition, such as nickel with guys like Isaac Gifford, Chris Kolarevic and Javin Wright.

“We got the luxury right now having some guys that can all go out there and be a starter,” Chinander said. “I think it’s a great thing to have, a great problem to have because we have to have good practice.”

Chinander said that he was happier with the second scrimmage than the first but that there is still plenty to work on.

“I was pleased with the pass rush in the scrimmage,” Chinander said. “Tackling was good. We had one really big bust that led to a touchdown. So that’s got to get cleaned up, and a few communication errors, personnel, subbing, packages, those went in a lot smoother than the first scrimmage.”

As for when the coveted Blackshirts will be handed out to the team’s top defenders, Chinander said it would be before the team leaves for Ireland or right after they arrive.
