Fairbury man arrested for allegedly killing 2-year-old boy
The Fairbury man is currently being held without bond at the Jefferson County Jail.
FAIRBURY, Neb. (KLKN) –A Fairbury man has been arrested and charged with 2nd degree murder after a 2-year-old boy has died. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s office says Jake Gonzales is accused of causing severe injuries to the torso and head of a 2-year-old, who was found during a welfare check for the child’s mother.
The Sheriff’s department was called to the area of J Street in Fairbury on Friday to perform a welfare check for a female resident. Officials say after speaking with the woman, she indicated she needed an ambulance for her 2-year-old. Deputies found the child in a closet of the apartment where he showed signs of severe injury and was unresponsive. The child was taken to a local hospital but was then flown by helicopter to an Omaha hospital where he was later pronounced dead due to his injuries.
Deputies say when Gonzales, who was at the apartment at the time of the welfare check, heard officials calling for an ambulance, he fled and a foot pursuit ensued.
A short time later, Gonzalez was apprehended by deputies and taken to the Jefferson County Jail. He is now being held on 2nd Degree Murder, Child Abuse Resulting in Death, Terroristic Threats, First Degree False Imprisonment and Obstructing of Government Operations.
Gonzalez is being held without bond.
This remains under investigation and formal charges will be filed by the Jefferson County Attorney’s Office.
