Family member speaks out after the death of a Lincoln teenager

Derow Young is the godfather of Zayne Yost, the 14-year-old boy who died earlier this week during a car chase.

Today, Young has an important message to share.

The incident that took the teenagers life occurred on Wednesday morning when a stolen vehicle being pursued by police crashed going westbound on I–80 at the northwest 48th street exit.

The four teenage boys who were inside the stolen SUV were ejected after a rollover, including 14-year-old Zayne Yost.

Yost was later pronounced died at the scene.

His godfather Derow Young says he was a fun loving kid who had a big heart.

“Zayne was an awesome kid. Great heart, he loved people. He was the kind of kid that would put himself in trouble to get you out of trouble.”

Yost was a freshman at Lincoln Northeast High School.

Investigators believe Yost was a passenger in the vehicle.

The reason behind the incident is still under investigation.

The three other boys were transported to Bryan Medical Center with non–life threatening injuries.

Young wants them to know there are no hard feelings.

“We love you too and we are going to support you and walk in this journey with you. We have no hatred, no nothing toward you, we love you just as though you was one of our own. We just want to continue to do that and support them as well.”

Young says that these days, kids are trying too hard to fit in with the right crowd… And he has an important lesson to share.

“They just need to learn how to be themselves. Love themselves and love who they are. That’s the way god created them to be and that should be enough, you don’t have to do anything outside of that just so that other people can like you.”

There is a gofundme page set up for the Yost family, if you’d like to donate go to www.gofundme.com/k3dx3j-funeral-expenses.
