Family of slain teen breaks silence after guilty verdict

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN)- The family of Ali Al-Burkat broke their silence after receiving a guilty verdict in the trial of Majdal Elias on Thursday.

Elias was convicted of second-degree murder for the 2019 killing of 15-year-old Ali Al-Burkat and will be sentenced on May 18th.

The family expressed the significance of the verdict and the feelings that followed the outcome.

Ali’s mother spoke about how the decision hasn’t helped her cope with her son’s death.

“So we’ve been waiting almost three years for that verdict and I thought it’s gonna give me closure and heal me a little bit, but it was the opposite way,” said Al-Musa. “I remembered him more, I cried more that day just hoping that we didn’t have to go through all of this, but there was a little peace of mind.”

His mother wants teens and parents to be vigilant and aware to prevent others from experiencing her plight.

“Think about it before you go, think about who you’re going to leave behind before thinking about doing something bad.”

The family extends thanks to Lincoln Police Department and those who’ve continued to support them throughout the trial.
