LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – As of Wednesday morning, the 2026 N.S.A.A. Volleyball Championship Games have officially taken off.

Channel 8 spoke with fans at the Pinnacle Bank Arena before some of the games began.

“Volleyball is kind of the thing here in Nebraska now, so everyone’s getting on board and, you know, pushing that female sports are the thing right now,” said Tyler Collier, a staffer at North Star High School.

“Well, because this is a volleyball state. I mean, volleyball is really all that matters come this time of year. I mean, it’s a big, big deal,” said a proud supporter of one Elkhorn North player.

School bands played music ad matchups in all classes began.

Friends, family and classmates of the student athletes filled the risers of PBA, touting creative posters and props.

Before the North Star versus Southwest game began, Collier told Channel 8 what it meant to see their students compete, especially since last year the girls were runner-up’s.

“Seeing them play club volleyball, and I know how hard they work to be in this moment and be in this opportunity to, you know, try to run it back and get to another championship game and hopefully win it this year,” he said.

Many families showed up in droves on Wednesday.

One large group told Channel 8 that it’s been a high-quality year for many of the teams taking part.

“In all classes, not just class A, it’s B, class C, they’re nationally rated teams in this entire tournament. It’s unbelievable,” said Cory Vandenberg.

Even a few Husker women’s volleyball players showed up, alongside their coach Danny Busboom-Kelly.

Coach Busboom-Kelly, a two-time NSAA champion herself.

Their presence providing proof that taking part in a sport at this level can truly lead to greatness.

“These girls all know each other, so that makes it another huge connection for this tournament. So, you know, you watch this thing and it’s not just watching your team, you’re watching girls that play together and now they’re playing against each other. It’s unbelievable to see,” said Vandenberg.

The group was excited for all, but also rooting on one special Elkhorn North player.

“Good job, Sky! Let’s go Wolves!” they exclaimed.

The final matchups will happen Saturday at the John Cook Arena, at the Devaney Center.
