BETHLEHEM, Mideast. (ABC) — Social distancing and face masks are a must to access Manger Square in Bethlehem, which will see no Christmas carols this year. The midnight mass at the Church of Nativity will be restricted to the clergy.

Usually, the city would be crammed with visitors, but with the pandemic still looming, only locals are allowed to be there.

Israelites remain positive despite the empty stores, turning to prayer and song for comfort.

“For the first time in history, Bethlehem lacks its people, its visitors, its guests, its pilgrims. For the first time, Bethlehem is living the silent night of Bethlehem,” said Juliana Saca Hodali, Producer of Media Plus. “This famous song, this year is the only year that the churches would be empty from people, Manger Square is not as lively as it used to be. Despite this, we thought sharing song on social media and media channels, would at least give hope that Bethlehem that is still the place that delivers Christmas to the whole world. And is the place where hope was born – where it all started.”
