Summer feel and fire danger today 5/19/2022

Spring is taking a day off today, and instead it will feel like summer! Highs will quickly warm into the low to mid-90s with sunny skies and windy conditions. We could break high temperature records with temperatures that warm in May! Wind gusts will be around 30 mph or higher and this is raising concern for fire weather. Warm temperatures, windy conditions and dry air are all the ingredients needed for fire weather. A Red Flag Warning will be in effect from noon to 9 PM today in western and central NE. Today will be a no burning day and it’s a good idea to avoid use of open flames today, even if you aren’t in the warning. A cold front will move through late this evening, and there is a small chance that it could produce a few thunderstorms. Anytime around 8 PM and beyond some storms could try to bubble up in southeastern NE. If storms form, they have the potential to become strong, but I think the chances are pretty low. Clouds return overnight and temperatures cool a bit thanks to the cooler air moving in from the cold front. We’ll start off your Friday with lows in the 50s and eventually will warm into the low 70s. The weekend looks even cooler for May with highs in the 60s and the chance for some showers early Saturday.
