LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Food Bank of Lincoln broke ground with big spoons for a new building on Thursday in northwest Lincoln.

The groundbreaking ceremony brought together members supporting organizations and staff and the community to celebrate the start of construction.

The organization adds the location will enable them to connect more people to meals, increase access to healthy food and shorten food lines.

“There are 55,570 people in our service area that are food insecure,” said Steph Vanous, Food Bank of Lincoln. “This building will provide us the opportunity to touch those lives and to get to those people.”

A food bank director says the capital campaign is still about $1 million short of what they need for the building. They encourage the public to participate in the Give to Lincoln Day happening next Tuesday.
