Gov. Pete Ricketts promotes Nebraska on trade mission to UK, Ireland

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Gov. Pete Ricketts is in Europe this week leading a trade mission.

Ricketts’ team met with many organizations in the United Kingdom and Ireland to boost Nebraska agriculture and insurance overseas.

Officials met with the Association of British Insurers as insurance is one of the largest industries in Nebraska.

The governor says Nebraska has over 14,000 insurance workers employed at over 120 companies.

“We are No. 1 in surplus, No. 3 in assets, so this is an area where we have a great number of expertise in,” he said.

But insurance wasn’t the only thing on the schedule.

Officials also visited local farms that are generationally owned, much like here in Nebraska, and discussed climate change’s impact on agriculture.

Many restaurants, like Goodmans in London, feature Nebraska beef on their menu, which could open the door to more Nebraska-produced beef being served in establishments overseas.

Ricketts said agriculture and insurance offer the biggest growth opportunities regarding trade with Europe.
