UPDATE: Gymnastics coach fired after being arrested for sexual assault
Papillion gymnastics coach Alexander Thomas is being held in the Sarpy County Jail
PAPILLION, Neb. (KLKN) – A gymnastics coach in the Omaha area has been arrested and charged with two counts of sexually assaulting a child.
Police say 30-year-old Alexander Thomas was arrested on Wednesday and booked in the Sarpy County Jail in Papillion. Investigators say Thomas coached at Metro Stars Gymnastics in Papillion when he assaulted a student younger than 14 at that location in January.
“We remain shocked and deeply disturbed by the events leading to the arrest of Alex Thomas. The safety of your children is our paramount concern,” Metro Stars wrote in a statement sent to parents.
The statement goes on to say Thomas has been terminated and banned from the premises. Metro Stars says they’ve hired a safety consultant to review and determine if additional safety measures are required to protect all members.
On Thursday a judge set Thomas’ bail at $250,000. Metro Stars officials say after learning about the charges Wednesday they immediately fired Thomas after he had coached at the Papillion location for four years. Metro Stars sent an email to customers Wednesday asking families to report any concerns to the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office.
