Overview:

The latest stretch of warmer weather reaches its peak on Monday afternoon with potentially some of the warmest high temperatures of the calendar year in southeast Nebraska. Relatively cooler conditions make their way into the forecast by the middle of the work week alongside chances of precipitation.

A Heat Advisory remains in place for northern portions of the state for the rest of Sunday, before an additional advisory goes into effect on Monday covering most of the state. Heat indices across the state will range from 100° to 110°.

Sunday Night:

If covering the heat was not enough, an isolated severe storm or two will be possible this evening along the Nebraska-South Dakota border. A Marginal Risk (Level 1 out of 5) of severe weather is in place, with large hail and damaging winds the main concerns for the strongest storms.

We will see little relief from the heat through the overnight hours, with temperatures only falling to the lower to middle 70s by early Monday morning.

Clear skies tonight in Lincoln, though the heat and humidity have no plans of leaving town on Monday. The wind will offer little relief, staying light out of the southeast.

Monday:

Air temperatures are expected to reach the triple digits on Monday afternoon, with a select few lucky enough to only reach the upper 90s.

The Capital City will see mostly sunny skies as temperatures reach the 90s by lunchtime and a high near 100°. Winds will be a touch faster out of the southwest, occasionally gusting to 20 miles per hour.

Higher humidity will once again drive heat indices above 100° across the state. It will be best to avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the afternoon and evening hours.

Another round of showers and storms will be possible with a system passing to our northeast. Scattered severe storms will be possible, with a Slight Risk (Level 2 out of 5) in place for northeast Nebraska. Once again, large hail and damaging winds will be the greatest concern for the strongest storms in the area.

We see better chances for precipitation in southeast Nebraska starting late Wednesday and continuing until Friday. We see a brief break from the heat as high temperatures return to the 80s. Long-term forecasts suggest a return to our seasonal highs in the lower 90s by the end of the month.
