Husker baseball advances in Big Ten tourney with win over Rutgers

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Nebraska baseball will continue its Big Ten tournament run after a win over Rutgers on Wednesday.

After nine innings under the sun at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, the Huskers won 9-7 in the first round of the tourney.

Nebraska’s offense got a spark in the first inning with a three-run home run from Charlie Fischer.

Home plate went untouched for four innings until Rutgers’ Ryan Lasko hit a pop-up to right field, bringing in Jordan Sweeney for the run.

Shortly after, a double from Evan Sleight brought in two more runs for Rutgers.

The Scarlet Knights continued their offensive output with three more runs in the seventh inning, bringing the score to 6-3.

But the Huskers bounced right back in the bottom of the seventh with a three-run home run from Gabe Swansen.

With bases loaded later in the inning, Rutgers pitcher Gorski walked two batters and hit Casey Burnham with a pitch.

Once the smoke cleared in the seventh, the Huskers led 9-6.

Rutgers added one more run in the eighth inning, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit.

Nebraska will now go on to face Maryland at 6 p.m. Thursday.
