Husker fans excited for Trev Alberts hire

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln's new athletic director has Husker fans dreaming big.

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) –  Nebraska Cornhusker fan Don Karnopp has had football season tickets since 1958.

“I’ve only missed three home games,” Karnopp exclaimed.

During that time, he’s witnessed the glory years and some lean ones as well. He’s hopeful that the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s hiring of Trev Alberts as the new athletic director will help restore the football program to its winning ways of the 1990s.

“I think it’s gonna be a very good hire,” Karnopp said. “I do.”

He’s not the only fan excited about bringing Alberts on board. Maddie Pressler has been a Husker fan all of her life. She’s optimistic Alberts is the right person to turn the football program around and sustain the success that the volleyball and baseball teams have enjoyed in recent years.

“I have seen the energy throughout this last baseball season,” Pressler said. “And I’d love to just be able to experience that all year long. And I think that [Alberts] can really bring that to every single team at UNL.”

What would fans consider a successful stint for Alberts?

“I’d love to see the football team start winning,” Pressler said. “I’d love to see us go to a bowl game.”

Other fans, like Case Maranville, who has cheered on the Huskers since 1985, have bigger dreams.

“The Big 10 championship would be great! I think that would be the first step,” Maranville said. “Winning the conference. That’ll be perfect and then moving on from there just to be competitive, to land us in the top five in the nation would be great.”

Karnopp says Husker football fans are patient, but are hungry to cheer on a winner.

“If he can’t do it, I don’t know who can do it,” Karnopp said.
