Husker marching band member dies in car accident Friday night

On Friday night, at a little after 10:30pm, a multiple-vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of 10th and Arapahoe street, claiming one life and injuring five others.

“There’s two vehicles involved, we believe one was traveling south bound on 10th street in the inside lane, the other was exiting a parking lot that’s on the west side of 10th streets, and the two cars collided as the vehicles were pulling out of the parking lot,” said Captain Ryan Dale with LPD.

Passengers from both vehicles required hospitalization, five in total.

20-year-old Tyler Butterfield, a cornhusker marching band member and junior accounting major at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, was killed in the wreck.

On Saturday, many people sent their condolences over social media after hearing about Tyler’s passing, including governor Pete Ricketts who said, “the passing of trumpet player Tyler Butterfield was a big loss for our huskers marching band. Our thoughts and prayers are with the band and family.”

At this time, there is no official word on the extent of the injuries of those taken to the hospital.

Police are still investigating the situation, including the cause of the accident.
