The Kearney Hy-Vee distributed nearly 2,000 free jumbo, seedless watermelons to customers on Saturday during a contactless, drive-thru giveaway.

During the event, watermelons were loaded directly into customer vehicles to limit physical contact. The event was made possible thanks to Hy-Vee’s melon supplier Sol Group who donated the jumbo watermelons in light of the current coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Each watermelon weighed around 20 pounds for a total contribution of approximately 40,000 pounds.

“Hy-Vee has always been about giving back to the communities they serve,” said Adam Lazo, head of sales for Sol Group Marketing. “We want to make sure we are doing everything we can to help them take care of those in need.

“We deeply appreciate Sol Group’s partnership in helping us care for our customers and the Kearney community,” said Adam Krepela, store director of the Kearney Hy-Vee. “We hope this donation provides some relief to our customers, especially as more families become financially impacted during this time.”

The donation is part of a series of donations that Hy-Vee and Sol are making to help provide fresh melons to customers and food banks across Hy-Vee’s eight-state region.
