‘I just want to leave Memorial Stadium happy’: Excited Husker fans welcome Matt Rhule

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – It’s been a tough few years for Husker fans, culminating in Scott Frost being fired mid-season in early September.

The football team finished its 2022 season last weekend with a 4-8 record.

“At this point, honestly, I just want to leave memorial stadium happy a few times next year,” fan Sarah Marlowe said. “I will take any win we can get. There’s no such thing as not enough wins.”

Replacing Frost is former NFL coach Matt Rhule. He comes to Nebraska after coaching the Carolina Panthers for two years and building a reputation of being able to turn college teams around.

“He has the history and the background of turning programs from nothing into something,” one fan said. “That’ll be crucial in helping us become nationally relevant again.”

Before his first press conference as a Husker, fans got to meet Rhule and welcome him to Memorial Stadium.

Many are excited about Rhule and think he has what it takes to improve the Huskers.

“I think it’s a great hire,” Marlowe said. “He’s a proven program builder, which seems to be what we need.”

As with any new coach, most fans aren’t expecting the team to win a national championship next season.

“I think anytime you get a good coach, you have to have some patience,” University of Nebraska-Lincoln student Christian Jaeger said. “You can’t really expect greatness right away. Give him a couple of seasons, and I’m sure we’ll see a turnaround here.”

Rhule gave a quick speech and threw signed footballs into the crowd before addressing the media in the Hawks Championship Center.
