Investigation underway after inmate assaults 3 staff members, officials say

Corrections officials said an investigation is underway after three staff members were assaulted by an inmate at the Nebraska State Penitentiary on Monday.

NDCS officials said the assault occurred just before 8 a.m. inside a dining hall when a staff member standing by the serving line was punched in the head multiple times by an inmate. Two other staff members trying to secure the inmate received minor injuries, officials said.

The staff member who was hit in the head was taken to the hospital to be treated for a cut under the eye, officials said, while the other staff members did not need medical assistance.

The incident will be investigated with findings provided to the county attorney for determination of criminal prosecution. The NDCS disciplinary process will be utilized with sanctions, such as loss of good time, applied according to the rules and regulations.
