WASHINGTON (KLKN) — UPDATE: Authorities now report five patients have been taken to the hospital. They say the bridge collapse was likely caused by an earlier collision, not structural issues.

D.C. Fire says four patients have been taken to the hospital, and two more are being assessed. A hazmat unit is mitigating a diesel fuel leak from a truck that is partially beneath the bridge. At least 1 other vehicle was struck by debris.

The roadway is blocked from both directions.

A pedestrian bridge has collapsed in Washington, D.C. Wednesday afternoon.

So far, fire officials say three people have suffered minor injuries.
