LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) –Congressman Mike Flood congratulated the new Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy, after a tumultuous four-day race for the seat.

Flood said working with Speaker McCarthy and fellow Republicans on the issues the U.S faces, specifically controlling spending, will help continued growth.

Congratulations to my friend and colleague Kevin McCarthy on his election as the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. Kevin worked tirelessly to bring our diverse caucus together, and in doing so, he has demonstrated once again that he is the right leader for the House at the right time.”

Flood wasn’t the only one to congratulate McCarthy on his win. U.S. Representative for Nebraska’s 3rd congressional district, Adrian Smith welcomed McCarthy.

“There is no one more qualified to lead House Republicans than Kevin. His hard work and clear vision earned us the majority, and his open-minded approach to leadership paved the way for an open and inclusive process for selecting a speaker.”

Smith also said that he was proud of the way McCarthy handled the process on the House floor after passionate negotiations led to Representative Mike Rogers being physically held back after lunging at U.S Representative Matt Gaetz.

“Governing can be messy – especially when you are committed to an open process,” said Smith.

It took over 24 hours to officially elect McCarthy to the new role after arguments ensued on the House floor after the 24th ballot refused to elect McCarthy.

McCarthy ultimately overcame opposition by making a series of concessions outlined in the Republican rules package.
