LFR and NCBB partner in new program for pre-hospital blood transfusion

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Nebraska Community Blood Bank (NCBB) and Lincoln Fire and Rescue (LFR) has announced a new blood transfusion program.

The program allows trained EMS providers to give blood transfusions to critically injured patients before they arrive at the hospital.

LFR and NCBB officials joined together on Sept. 29 to announce the new program.

Specially trained EMS providers will carry blood products and begin blood transfusions, for patients experiencing severe blood loss, at the scene or on the way to the hospital.

Cheryl Warholoski, executive director at NCBB, said this program could be lifesaving.

“This program represents an important step forward in emergency care and our ability to get lifesaving blood to patients when they need it most,” Warholoski said. “We’re proud to partner with Lincoln Fire & Rescue to bring this capability to our community and help ensure critically injured patients can begin receiving blood as quickly as possible.”
