Lincoln Airport offers pieces of Runway 18/36 as keepsakes

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Lincoln Airport (LNK) is offering pieces of Runway 18/36 as keepsakes. The runway is LNK’s primary runway and is currently under reconstruction.

Runway 18/36 was constructed nearly 70 years ago. Some portions of its original construction were still present before the reconstruction.

“Runway 18/36 has connected generations of travelers, supported our military partners and played an important role in Lincoln’s growth,” said Chad Lay, Director of Planning and Development at the Lincoln Airport. “While we’re building for the future, it’s equally important to preserve and celebrate where we’ve been. These keepsakes allow people to own a small piece of that legacy while helping support future public art celebrating aviation at Lincoln Airport.”

The runway is 12,901 feet long and 200 feet wide. According to LNK, it is one of the longest runways in the Midwest.

The keepsakes are sections of concrete removed from Runway 18/36 during the construction. They are mounted to a wood base with a custom plaque.

LNK partnered with a local organization to make the plaques available to the public. A portion of each purchased will be donated back to Lincoln Airport Authority for future aviation-themed art exhibits at the airport.
