Lincoln Community Foundation helps raise awareness for Giving Tuesday

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Giving Tuesday is an international movement centered around giving back to nonprofits that make big impacts in communities.

“It’s a great opportunity to reach out and lend a hand to someone in need,” Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird said. “So many of our nonprofits are working hard to make sure people have warm clothes, food and other gifts for the holidays.”

Giving Tuesday was created in 2012 with the idea of encouraging people to do good heading into the holiday season.

The Lincoln Community Foundation is now helping out by raising awareness for Giving Tuesday.

“There are so many wonderful organizations in Lincoln that would be great recipients of your generosity on Giving Tuesday,” President Alec Gorynski said. “Whether you care about the arts, animals, or human services, there are so many great organizations doing really meaningful, impactful work in this town, and at this time of year, they need to be the beneficiary of your generosity as much as any time of the year.”

While the foundation is not accepting donations themselves, they are pointing community members towards local non-profits that could use the extra donations.

“During the season of giving we’re all inspired to give gifts to our loved ones, our family, our friends, but think about those you don’t see every day,” Gorynski said. “Think about those who need our support even if we don’t know it.”

In 2021, over 17 billion dollars were donated internationally on Giving Tuesday.

Some of the nonprofits in Lincoln that are accepting donations include the United Way, CEDARS and the Capital Humane Society.

“Your generosity means so much and touches people you don’t see every day,” Gorynski said. “Generosity is really what’s going to make the difference to support the work of so many great organizations.”
