Lincoln doctor’s bail set at $3.5 million in ‘egregious’ sexual assault case

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A Lincoln doctor is facing a $3.5 million bail after several of his former patients say he sexually assaulted them.

Dr. Scott Schmidt was arrested on suspicion first- and second-degree sexual assault of two of his patients between January 1 and July 1.

Schmidt was an addiction medicine specialist at Pine Lake Behavioral Health & Medical.

Deputy Lancaster County Attorney Matthew Mellor detailed the allegations in the courtroom on Friday afternoon.

“He then would perform oral sex on the patient while he was passed out in part from the medications,” Mellor said. “He also would have sexual contact with multiple patients, one of which has continued to suffer additional mental anguish due to the situation.”

Court documents show that there are five victims who say Schmidt assaulted them between 2016 and 2022. The victims are all men between the ages of 20 and 30.

“This represents one of the most egregious breaches of trust and victimization between a doctor and a patient,” Mellor said.

The prosecutor said that Schmidt does not have a “significant criminal history” but that the doctor has told one of his patients that he has access to $300,000 and has made suicidal statements.

The judge set Schmidt’s bail at $3.5 million.

He will need to pay $350,000 to get out of jail. Schmidt said in court that he will be able to.

His next appearance in court will be Oct. 28.

Meanwhile, Capt. Michael Scriven of the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office said there could be more victims who haven’t stepped forward yet.

“The investigation is ongoing, and the sheriff’s office would still urge anyone with information or who was sexually victimized by Dr. Scott Schmidt to contact the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office at 402-441-6500,” Scriven said.
