Lincoln firefighters prepare for one of winter’s worst possible scenarios

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Lincoln Fire & Rescue spent some time on the ice Thursday for ice rescue training, to prepare for one of winter’s worst possible scenarios.

Firefighters practiced drills that will help them save anyone that might be trapped under a frozen pond or lake as efficiently as possible.

LFR also shared a few fun facts about their exercise:

  • The ice firefighters practiced on was approximately 8-12″ deep.
  • The crew cuts a triangle into the ice and pushes it under the remaining ice sheet, leaving a bit sticking out.  They then put bolts into the ice to keep it in place.
  • When their training is concluded, they will pull the triangular piece back out from under the remaining ice and put it back in place.
