Lincoln inmate serving a life sentence for murder dies in custody

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services says an inmate died at the Reception and Treatment Center in Lincoln.

Michael Gunther was serving a life sentence on charges of first-degree murder and use of a firearm to commit a felony.

The 67-year-old committed the crimes in Sarpy County and began his sentence in 2005.

Gunther’s cause of death has not yet been determined, but he was being treated for a medical condition.

A grand jury will be conducting an investigation.
