Lincoln man arrested after Husker game for assault on officer

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A Lincoln man has been arrested for assaulting a police officer after the Nebraska football game on Saturday, Sept. 19.

Around 11:30 p.m., a Lincoln Police Department (LPD) officer was directing traffic due to the high traffic from the game. The officer was holding pedestrian traffic from crossing when a group of friends approached the intersection.

One of the group members, John Kane, 20, of Lincoln, began crossing against traffic.

The officer gave Kane multiple directions to stop crossing with no compliance. The officer then put his hand on Kane’s back to direct him out of the street.

Kane then grabbed the officer’s collar and pulled down. The officer took Kane to the ground and informed him of his arrest. Kane began resisting arrest which prompted another officer coming to assist in his arrest.

According to LP, the officer sustained minor injuries, including a cut to his elbow, abrasions on both knees and pain. The encounter also caused the officer’s traffic equipment to break.

After investigation, officers found a fake ID on Kane. At the Lancaster County Jail, a breath sample indicated a 0.235 BAC.

Kane was arrested and lodged for third-degree assault on an officer, resisting arrest, obstructing a peace officer and false reporting.

LPD urges Husker fans to obey all officer hand signals and verbal commands, not the traffic signals.
