Press Release from Keith County Sheriff

On August 18, 2018, Game and Parks Conservation officers responded to a crash in Martin Bay on Lake McConaughy, where two jet skis crashed into each other. Nathaniel Maxcy (DOB 10/16/1995) of Lincoln, NE, passed away at Lake McConaughy in Keith County, Nebraska as a result of a Jet Ski accident. A preliminary investigation showed that the Jet Ski operators were spraying water and coming close to one another. This appears to be in violation of the 30 yard rule regarding Jet Skis.

Maxcy appears to have crossed the path in front of the other Jet Ski which caused the other Jet Ski to strike Maxcy directly. A juvenile was also on the back of the Maxcy Jet Ski. All three Jet ski occupants were thrown into the water. They were rescued by local individuals with Maxcy and the juvenile having to be transported to Ogallala Hospital.

Maxcy was pronounced dead at the hospital. The juvenile was released with minor injuries while the other Jet Ski operator did not require transport to any medical institution.

Game and Parks Officers will continue to further investigate the accident including a complete review of both Jet Skis and their damage. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor. All Jet Ski individuals were wearing life jackets. However, neither Jet Ski operator had completed a boater education course.
