Lincoln organizations prepare for Black History Month celebrations

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – February marks the beginning of Black History Month and Lincoln organizations are preparing for an upcoming event.

Black is Beautiful Nebraska board member Zainab Funnah said organizing the Black History Month Art Exhibition was no small feat.

“I think it’s super important and this is an event we’re putting on because there is not a lot of focus on Black art,” she said.

Spreetail Professionals of Color will be following the event with an in-house panel, co-founder Michael Blake said.

“In Lincoln, or Nebraska in general, the majority of the population is Caucasian,” he said. “And so their experiences might not allow them the opportunity to be involved with those that identify as people of color. We feel that if we provide that opportunity, all we can do is better help our communities and our world if we’re educating each other.”

The Black History Month Art Exhibition will be held at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Great Plains Art Museum on Friday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
