Lincoln Parks and Rec: Prescribed burn in Pioneers Park set for Wednesday

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Lincoln Parks and Recreation Department has scheduled a prescribed burn in Pioneers Park on Wednesday.
The burn, which is scheduled from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., will be on about 5 acres of the remnant prairie located north of the sledding area.
The equestrian trail in the sledding area will be closed during the burn, according to officials. Access to the Pioneers Park Nature Center will remain open.
Officials said community members are advised to stay clear of the area during the burn.
Aaron Druery, the Parks and Recreation greenways district supervisor, said that prescribed and controlled burns are tools for managing large areas of native plants and grasses, reducing wildfire risk, and enhancing wildlife habitat.
