Lincoln Police Department to conduct high-visibility traffic safety initiative starting June 1

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Lincoln Police Department is conducting a high-visibility traffic safety initiative next month.

From June 1 through August 31, additional LPD officers will work overtime to monitor high-traffic corridors and areas prone to serious collisions.

LPD said officers will focus on speeding, which they said is one of the primary contributing factors in fatal traffic crashes.

“Warmer weather, school vacations and holiday travel generate a significant increase in traffic volume and a corresponding rise in hazardous driving behaviors,” LPD said in a press release.

A grant from the Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office funds the safety campaign.

LPD said the grant allows the police department to focus specifically on traffic safety and enforcement without reducing the number of officers available to respond to routine emergency calls for service.
