Lincoln woman carries baby for best friend

A Lincoln woman is giving her best friend one of the most meaningful and personal gifts one can give, the gift of motherhood.

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Katie Gifford wondered if she would ever be able to hold her baby in her arms.

Katie has a muscle disease that her doctors have told her makes it dangerous for her to give birth. She and her husband looked into surrogacy options and were blown away by how expensive it was.

“It was devastating,” she said. “Like, there was no way we were going to be able to have children this way.”

Then, one day at a school reunion, Katie asked her close friend, current Lincoln resident Jessica Gentry a question.

“Hypothetically, would you ever be a surrogate for someone?” Katie asked.

Jessica, a mother of four, said it depended on who she would be carrying the baby for. When Katie told Jessica she would like her to be a surrogate mother for her baby, Jessica talked to her husband and agreed that she would do it.

“I think it’s really amazing,” Jessica said. “I never thought I would be able to do something this big, so the fact that I’m able to do it makes me feel really, really good.”

A few months ago, Katie learned that she would be having a baby boy. She says she’s grateful that Jessica was so willing to bring him into the world.

“Jessica wasn’t our last choice, she was our only choice,” she said. “It just melts my heart and makes me feel so like overwhelmingly blessed to have [Jessica] in my life.”

Jessica is currently in her third trimester. Because of surrogacy laws in Nebraska, Jessica will be in South Dakota, where Katie lives. Baby Gifford is due on September 14th.

“I don’t even know if I’m going to believe that it’s actually happening until he’s in my arms,” Katie said.
