A man was cited for drunk driving after he allegedly running into the back of a Lincoln police officer’s cruiser.

The crash happened just after midnight Thursday near 70th and Van Dorn Street.

An officer was at the window of another  vehicle talking to the driver when the back of his cruiser was struck by another car, Officer Erin Spilker said.

The driver of that vehicle – identified as 22-year-old Preston Tangeman – was cited for DUI, open alcohol container, no insurance and negligent driving.

Tangeman blew a .228 in a chemical test, which is more than three times the legal limit, Spilker said.

“It is very fortunate that the officer was not in the vehicle at the time of the accident as he would have been seriously injured,” Spilker said. “The cruiser was totaled as the frame was crushed from rear to front.  The mobile computer flew off the platform as well.”

Neither the officer or Tangeman needed medical assistance.
