UPDATE: Lincoln woman dies from gunshot wound to the head
UPDATE: Lincoln Police have confirmed 54-year old Rachel Garten has died after she was shot in the head Saturday night.
It happened in a neighborhood near West South Street and S Coddington Avenue.
Police responded to the area on reports of a disturbance. When they got to the home they said 58-year-old Eric Garten fired a single shot from a handgun and took his own life.
Rachel suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was transported to the hospital in critical condition. They haven’t said who fired the bullet that would kill her.
Police said officers didn’t fire any shots. They’re still investigating.

Police identified the couple involved as Eric Garten, 58, and Rachel Garten, 54.
Police say when they arrived at the home in the 2300 block of Southwest 18th, Eric Garten fired a single shot from a handgun, taking his own life.
Rachael Garten also suffered a gunshot wound to the head and remains in critical condition, police said. Investigators are still determining how that happened.
Police say officers did not fire any shots, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Police say when they arrived at a home at the 2300 block of Southwest 18th around 11p.m., a 58-year-old man fired a single shot from a handgun, taking his own life. Police also say a 54-year-old woman had a gunshot wound to the head and was taken to the hospital where she is listed in critical condition.
No shots were fired at Lincoln Police officers.
Lincoln Police continue to investigate what prompted the shooting but say there is no ongoing threat to the public. We’ll have more on this story as it becomes available.
