The Lincoln Police Department has ordered officers to discard certain face masks, after some raised complaints that they looked like the Confederate flag.

Pictures circulating on social media show an officer at a Black Lives Matter protest holding a face mask that some said had the flag’s design on it, the department said in a Facebook post Friday morning.

“We can understand how some people think it resembled the Confederate flag, but that is not the case,” says Officer Luke Bonkiewicz.

“The officer was wearing the donated mask which can clearly be seen in the second photo,” the post said. “While the mask is not the confederate flag, we have ordered all officers to discard masks with this pattern to avoid any confusion.”

Bonkiewicz says the masks were donated to officers from a member of the community, along with a a number of masks with other patterns on them.
