A 34-year-old woman is facing assault and hate crime charges after reportedly attacking a man in a park area.

Lincoln police officers responded around 8 p.m. Thursday to Union Plaza near 21st and O St. on reports of a disturbance.

When officers arrived, they found 34-year-old Monique Mesteth, identified by police as a Native American woman, yelling at people as she walked away from the scene, police said.

The alleged victim, identified by police as a 56-year-old black man, reported he was sitting in the park when Mesteth approached him. The man reported Mesteth threw a bottle of Gatorade at him and told him to leave the park because he was black. The man reported Mesteth then began punching him in the ribs and pushed him. She then made several racially-motivated statements, police said.

Officers interviewed three witnesses who confirmed the man’s report, police said.

Mesteth was lodged for third-degree assault with a hate crime enhancement.
