LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Authorities say the owners of a property north of Lincoln went to help a driver stuck in the snow, only to find he was stealing from them.

Lancaster County Sheriff Terry Wagner says the owners of a home in the 2400 block of NW 98th St. noticed a car in their driveway Monday night.

When they went out to see if the driver needed help, they discovered several of their belongings were inside the car, Wagner said.

The suspect, identified as 25-year-old Alexander Janeke, of Lincoln, had broken into a storage shed on the property and taken the items, Wagner said.

Deputies were able to track Janeke’s footprints in the snow to a neighboring home, he said.

Janeke was arrested on burglary and theft charges.

Wagner said the vehicle he was using was also reported stolen.
