Meet Officer Hunk, newest member of Crete Police

CRETE, Neb. (KLKN) – Crete is welcoming the newest member of its police department, Officer Hunk.

Hunk is a 1-year-old purebred Belgian Malinois and the only police dog in Crete.

He came from Europe and was trained in the Czech language, so his handler in Crete gives commands in Czech.

Now Hunk is learning to sniff out narcotics, protect his handler and track runaways.

When Courtney Lovewell heard about the expenses it takes to bring a police dog to the community, she knew she wanted to help.

“Being new to the community, I kind of just wanted this to be my baby,” said Lovewell, general manager of Hotworx Crete, a fitness studio. “[I wanted] to see what we could do to help alleviate those costs of bringing Hunk to the community.”

Lovewell organized a fundraiser through Hotworx and other local businesses.

And thanks to her work, $1,300 was raised to help the department welcome Hunk.
