Meet Twiggy: The water-skiing squirrel

LINCOLN, Neb (KLKN) – Meet Twiggy, a famous water-skiing squirrel that will be in town at the Nebraska Boat, Sport and Travel show over the weekend.

The whole thing started as a joke back in 1978 when Chuck Best rescued a baby squirrel from its nest during a hurricane. Chuck and his wife, Lou Ann nursed the squirrel back to health before he decided to let it try and water-ski with a toy boat.

Chuck and Lou Ann then brought their show across the world traveling as far as Europe and Germany.

In 1997, Chuck passed away in a boating accident and Lou Ann canceled the shows in 1998. After a squirrel came through her window, Lou Ann believed it was time to start the business again, this time while promoting water safety in honor of her late husband.

Now Best’s son, Chuck Jr. has continued the Twiggy legacy by going around the country to promote water and boating safety.

“The biggest reason we do this is because my dad lost his life in a boating accident,” said Chuck Jr. “So being able to promote water safety and now be the spokes animal for the national safe boating council wear-it campaign and to promote water safety on my dad’s behalf I think its a huge message.”

Twiggy will be around for the whole weekend at the Lancaster Event Center with four shows on Saturday and three shows on Sunday.
