Minimally invasive surgery available in Lincoln to help with back and leg pain

There’s a relatively new surgery out there, and only a handful of medical professionals in Nebraska know how to do it.

One of them is right here in Lincoln.

Patient Karen McBeth suffered a bad fall a while back, and was dealing with a lot of pain, mainly in her back and legs. She thought it was something she was just going to have to live with.

“Some of the other doctors that I had seen said no, there’s nothing more they could do,” McBeth said.

But then, one of her doctors directed her to Dr. Whitten at the Nebraska Pain Institute in Lincoln.

He performs a unique kind of surgery to help with the kind of pain McBeth was experiencing.

“Vertiflex is a unique device that is placed in between the bones in the back to provide additional space in the spinal canal to improve patients symptoms,” Dr. Whitten said. “When patients stand up, this area gets smaller and when they lean forward, it opens up. By placing this device in there, the way that they feel when they lean forward is the way that they feel when they stand up.”

The surgery has been around for about five years, and doesn’t take a big commitment.

It involves a small incision, and takes only 15-30 minutes to complete. Patients get to go home the same day and start living their lives again.

“It allows patients to walk further and to be able to have a better quality of life because they’re able to do the things they want to do instead of being sidelined by their illness,” Dr. Whitten said.

McBeth, like many other patients, was elated at the success of the surgery.

“Oh, I was…bless the Lord! It was amazing, it was just amazing to me,” McBeth said.

She says she’d recommend the surgery to anyone, and is finally back to living a pain free life.

If you think this surgery is something you’d be a good candidate for, you can ask your doctor for a referral to the Nebraska Pain Institute to learn more.
